Colorado > Big Mountain Trail Run Half Marathon, 10K & 5K
Colorado Springs, CO • Saturday, May 17, 2014 • Course Map
Instead of getting your incline from a plastic treadmill in an air-conditioned concrete building, try the challenging and rugged climbs of Cheyenne Canyon in Colorado Springs, Colorado. You'll begin at the Mesa Picnic Area.
Start times for the half marathon, 10K and 5K are 10:15 AM, 10:45 AM, and 11:00 AM respectively. secondary competition to help clean the environment will be happening as well -- runners who pick up trash along the course and trade it in at the finish line for a raffle to win a prize.
Located in beautiful Colorado Springs, Cheyenne Canyon is home to sky-high pine trees, rock formations, wildflowers, and waterfalls. It was once a camping ground for the Ute American Indian tribes. Colorado Springs itself is home to the historic Pikes Peak, Garden of the gods, the U.S. Olympic Committee, and the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Runners in the half marathon will enjoy running a single track uphill and descending onto dirt roads with picturesque views. The trail winds through the mountains, stone hops through a slow creek, and crossing through dark, historic tunnels.
The 10K starts with a difficult climb, but is 90% a single-track run. The 5K is a completely single track with views of the city in the distance. The 10K and 5K both have several inclines as you maneuver through the mountains. Medals will be given out to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd-place winners, and all runners will get a t-shirt for participating, and Healing Touch Massage will be there on race day to help runners wind down from the race.
