Colorado > Crested Butte Fall Color Classic Half Marathon
Crested Butte, CO • Saturday, September 24, 2011 • Course Map
Set for its second annual running along the dirt roads that wind through Kebler Pass and Ohio Pass near Crested Butte, Colo. -- after an inaugural run in 2010 that saw 64 runners cross the finish line -- the Crested Butte Fall Color Classic Half Marathon takes runners on an high-elevation run through the backcountry wilderness of the mountains near Gunnison and Crested Butte.
The race also is timed to coincide with the peak of the fall season here in the Rocky Mountains, as runners can expect to see all different shades of red, orange and gold on the trees as they make their way along a course that's made up almost entirely of dirt roads. There's just a brief stretch of pavement, and it's also mostly downhill through what is known as the Ohio Creek Valley, which parallels Highway 135 in the valley between Gunnison and Crested Butte.
Along the way, expect to see some of Colorado's most gorgeous scenery, from the mountains in the background to the stands of aspen trees and wildflowers on either side of the road. Though it's mostly downhill, there are some uphill stretches and the roads will be open to car traffic. The starting time for the race is scheduled for 9:00 AM.
