Colorado > Cruxy Half Marathon
Vail, CO  •  Saturday, September 28, 2013  •  Course Map

Part of a day of challenging trail races that will also feature a 50K and a 100K, the Ultimate Race of Champions will also feature what organizers call the Cruxy Trail Half Marathon, as part of an effort to bring together some of the world's best ultra trail runners as well as entrants who are newer to this growing sport within the running world.

All three races take runners along the mountainous trails and forests of Vail, the popular wintertime ski resort nestled high in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, about a two-hour drive in the mountains from downtown Denver. Like the 50K and the 100K, the Cruxy Trail Half follows an out-and-back course that starts and finishes in Vail Village, near the intersection of Willow Bridge Road and Gore Creek Drive.

From there, runners head west through the village and then onto the winding Gitalong Way, which takes them up the mountain on a climb that rises some 1,600 feet in elevation between the start and the highest point on the course. At the top, the course makes a loop and then heads back down, all the way to Vail for the race finish. The terrain for the race is really a combination of a few different surfaces, as some stretches are on paved roads, while the rest takes runners along winding, dirt mountain roads.

The location offers both plenty of challenging hills that will be even tougher for runners who haven't acclimated to a high-elevation run -- the half marathon reaches a peak elevation of just over 10,700 feet near its peak in the Vail ski area, around the mile 8 marker. There are some steep climbs and sharp turns, and the course will drop by an equal elevation on the way back in, as runners will retrace their steps back to Vail Village in the second half of this 15-mile-long race.

The scheduled starting time for the half marathon is 8:00 AM, and those running the half marathon will also start with the 50K runners. Those running in the 100K race will start a half-hour earlier, with a 7:30 AM start.

Race Weather & Climate

On the day of the race (Sept. 28), the average low is 28°F and the average high is 62°F.
