Colorado > Heart & Sole Half Marathon & 10K
Boulder, CO  •  Sunday, June 29, 2014  •  Course Map

Known in previous years as the Indian Summer Half Marathon, the renamed (in 2011) Heart & Sole Half Marathon & 10K follows the same out-and-back course as the old race, which starts and finishes at the Boulder Reservoir, and is open to both runners and walkers for both race distances.

The race -- which now features a 10K in addition to the 13.1-mile distance, run on a USATF-certified half marathon course -- takes runners on a route that circles the Boulder Reservoir and unfolds along the country roads just north of the city, with ample views of the hills and grassy meadows as well as the sandy beaches along the shoreline of the lake in the middle of the Boulder Reservoir park.

The out-and-back course for the event starts and finishes on the southern end of the reservoir, taking runners (and walkers -- the race organizers welcome both runners and walkers) first northward around the eastern side of the lake, taking them along the winding road that hugs the lakeshore up to the intersection with 55th Street. From there, runners turn left on Niwot Road, and then right again onto North 49th Street, which takes the field past Left Hand Pond.

The race route continues winding along the roads north of the reservoir, with turns onto Oxford Road, North 41st Street, Nimbus Road and 39th Street, a stretch of the race that features some of its most scenic views, with horse farms and groves of cottonwood trees on either side of the road as runners pass by, as well as Table Mountain, which lies in the distance to the north of the city.

After making their way along these middle miles of the race, runners merge once again onto Niwot Road and then onto 55th Street, which takes them in toward the western side of the reservoir toward the finish. The scheduled starting time for the half marathon is 7:10 AM, followed by the 10K start at 7:30 AM, and organizers ask that runners arrive at least one hour before the start of the race, to ensure everyone is able to start on time.

All proceeds from the event will benefit a pair of nonprofit organizations -- the Orphans of AIDS Trust Foundation, which provides support and care for children orphaned by AIDS in South Africa and the KwaZulu-Natal region, and the EXPAND program at the Boulder Parks & Recreation department, which supports people with disabilities to participate in the programs the city's parks have to offer.
