Colorado > Xterra Trail Run Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K
Colorado Springs, CO  •  Saturday, September 22, 2013  •  Course Map

With 20 miles of trails scattered among its nearly 1,700 acres less than a half hour's drive south from downtown Colorado Springs, Cheyenne Mountain State Park offers a backcountry getaway that's not far at all from the city for the Xterra Trail Run Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K, part of the nationwide Xterra running series that hosts trail running events throughout the year.

Just over 270 runners crossed the finish line at the Colorado Springs event in 2011, with 195 finishers in the half marathon alone, for a race that unfolds along an out-and-back course that starts and finishes at the Day Use Trailhead inside the park, just off Highway 115 and JL Ranch Heights Road. From there, runners start what can be roughly described as a loop course through the park, with one loop around the course for those running the half marathon and two loops for those running the full's 26.2 miles.

Most of the trails along the race route are wide, well-groomed dirt trails, with plenty of switchbacks, twists and turns through the park's many hills. For the half marathon, the course elevation rises some 400 feet between the first mile marker and the mile 4 marker, a gradual uphill that's followed by an equally gradual downhill over the next four and a half miles. The course begins rising again around the mile 9 marker, just over 200 feet by the time runners reach the mile 11 marker, and then heads downhill in to the finish line back at the trail head.

Organizers plan to post four aid stations with both water and Gatorade out on the course, but runners still are encouraged to bring along their own water bottles with them during the race, to ensure they stay properly hydrated. The scheduled starting time for the full and half marathon races is 8:00 AM, and the course will remain open until 3:00 PM.
