Part of the ZOOMA Women's Race Series that also features half marathon
events in the spring and fall in Austin, Annapolis and Atlanta, the
ZOOMA Colorado Half Marathon & 10K replaces the ZOOMA half marathon race that was run in Denver in 2009, and will be run in Colorado Springs for the second time in the summer of 2011.
Nestled along the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains here in central Colorado, near the base of the famed Pikes Peak, Colorado Springs offers a high-elevation course -- the city lies at just over 6,000 feet above sea level -- with spectacular mountain scenery all around. The city also is known for its military installations like the Peterson and Schreiver Air Force bases, where military commanders control the nation's communications and spy satellite programs, and is the home of the United States Air Force Academy.
The course for the race follows an out-and-back route that starts and finishes at Colorado Springs' The Broadmoor resort, a five-star resort famous for its 54 holes of golf, tennis camps and facilities, and its spa and fitness centers. From the starting line along El Pomar Road near the northwestern corner of the resort's golf course, the race starts out with two loops of just over three miles each around the golf course area, and then takes runners north along Cresta Road for the next few miles up to Lower Gold Camp Road.
Once runners reach the turnaround point on Lower Gold Camp Road, which occurs between the ninth and tenth mile markers, they then turn around and head back south along Cresta Road, through Bear Creek Regional Park and back toward the Broadmoor resort area for the finish line on El Pomar Road. The race features paved surfaces throughout the 13.1-mile course, and runners will have a three-and-a-half hour time limit to complete the half marathon.
