Delaware > Run for the Buds Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk
Wilmington, DE  •  Saturday, October 18, 2014  •  Course Map

Set for its 6th annual running in mid-fall 2014, Wilmington's Run for the Buds Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk takes runners on an out-and-back course that starts and finishes in Wilmington's Rockford Park, and features stretches through the nearby Alapocas Woods Park and Rock Manor Golf Course areas, filled with rolling hills throughout.

The race serves as a benefit for the local nonprofit organizations Best Buddies Delaware and the Down Syndrome Association of Delaware, both of which work to help children and families dealing with Down syndrome, by providing one-on-one support and friendships for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

In addition to the race registration fee, the race organizers also encourage both participants and their friends and families to support these organizations with general donations, which they can make on the race website.

Runners and walkers in both the 5K and the half marathon start the race from the park roads inside Rockford Park, whose most prominent landmark is its century-old Rockford Tower, which stands guard looking out over the park's wide-open meadows, wooded forest areas and trails, athletic fields and the nearby downtown areas of Wilmington in the distance.

Once they leave Rockford Park, runners head out first along the roads that take them eastward out of the park, along Tower Road and Pennsylvania Avenue for the race's first out-and-back stretch, that takes them up to the turnaround point between the first and second mile markers.

After hitting the turnaround, runners then retrace their steps back toward Rockford Park along the roads they've just run, and head all the way into the park along Park Drive. The route then heads out of the park and along the trails near Bancroft Mill Road, and crosses Brandywine Creek.

Once they make their way across the bridge over the creek, runners then head into Wilmington's densely wooded Alapocas Woods Park, where runners follow the winding trail that leads them eastward through to the Rock Manor Golf Course area.

Runners head all the way across Park Drive and Concord Pike into Rock Manor, and then wind their way along the trails through Rock Manor to the turnaround point just off Weldin Ridge Road. Then, runners make the turn and head back along exactly the route they've just run in the reverse direction, back to Rockford Park for the race finish.
