Georgia > Make It By Midnight Marathon & Half Marathon
Macon, GA  •  Saturday, July 13, 2013  •  Course Map

Ready for a small, intimate sized field of runners at a race where you'll want to, as the race name implies, "make it by midnight" to the finish line?

Macon's Make It By Midnight Marathon & Half Marathon is just that event, as the 6th annual running of this race in the summer of 2013 will be open to a maximum of 175 runners, after a 2011 race that saw a total of 116 runners cross the finish line in both races combined.

One of the unique aspects of this race is that the organizers allow runners to pick their own starting times -- a half marathoner who expects to finish in two hours, for example, can start her race at 10:00 PM, while someone running the full marathon who expects to finish in four hours would start at 8:00 PM. And no matter your starting time, the cutoff time for the race finish is 1:00 AM.

The out-and-back course for the race follows a 6.5-mile route that starts and finishes in the area known as Lake Wildwood, just south of the shores of the lake by the same name. Runners start the race at the time of their choosing at the Lake Wildwood Clubhouse on Clubhouse Road, and those running the 13.1-mile half marathon make two loops for their race, while those running the full marathon make four loops to complete their 26.2 miles.

Because the race takes place at night to avoid the heat of the Georgia sun during the daylight hours -- when the temperature often reaches the mid-90s this time of year -- runners are strongly encouraged to wear reflective running gear and bring along their own flashlights to carry with them during the race, at least to use when the sun goes down (which may not occur until after 9:00 PM).

Race Weather & Climate

Located near the geographic center of the state, roughly 85 miles south of Atlanta down Interstate 75, Macon sees its hottest weather of the year on average in July, when its average monthly temperatures range between 93°F and 71°F (by race time, the temperature should be closer to the lower end of that range).

Rainfall is the city's fourth-wettest month of the year, with an average of just over 4.3 inches of rainfall for the month.
