Georgia > Northeast Georgia Spring Run Half Marathon, 5K & 1-Mile Walk
Blairsville, GA  •  Saturday, April 5, 2014  •  Course Map

The mountains of northeastern Georgia play host to a small band of runners each spring and fall for the annual running of Blairsville's Northeast Georgia Runs, of which the April race is known as the Northeast Georgia Spring Run Half Marathon, 5K and 1-Mile Walk, which is followed in September by the Northeast Georgia Harvest Run, which also features the same race distances.

Run along an out-and-back loop course that the race organizers, the Union County Committee of the American Red Cross, say is "not difficult," the event starts and finishes at Blairsville's Meeks Park, which lies just over a mile west of the city's downtown. From there, those running the half marathon follow a wide loopp that takes them out along Highway 515, south along the Queens Gap Connector and Bunker Hill Road, and then back along the Blue Ridge Highway and Airport Industrial Road before bringing runners back to Meeks Park for the finish.

More than 180 runners and walkers crossed the finish line at the race's spring 2012 running, making this a small-sized, friendly race. While the 5K and the half marathon are for runners only, the event's one-mile walk is designed for walkers only, and entrants may register for the event on the day of the race at Meeks Park.

While in the area, runners can also take in some of the sights that Blairsville and the northeast Georgia mountains are known for -- Brasstown Bald, the highest mountain peak in Georgia, where you can tour the observation tower and look out onto the Appalachian Mountains all around; sections of the Appalachian Trail, which winds through the nearby Chattahoochee National Forest; and nearby Dahlonega, the site of the first gold rush in the United States, discovered some 20 years before gold in California.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachians in Georgia's northeast corner, roughly 10 miles from the border with North Carolina and about 100 miles northeast of Atlanta, Blairsville typically sees cool to moderately warm weather in April, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 16°F (in 1983) and as high as 89°F (in 1960).

April Avg. Day of Race Monthly Precip.
Low: 41°F Low: 38°F Rain: 4.4 in.
