Georgia > Run of the 'Ville Half Marathon & 5K
Snellville, GA • Saturday, June 16, 2012 • Course Map
Part of a weekend of outdoor events here in this small city just east of Atlanta that has experiencing booming growth over the past couple of decades in tandem with its larger neighbor, Snellville's Run of the 'Ville Half Marathon & 5K makes its second annual running in the early summer of 2012 as part of the "Sizzling Summer Snellville Kickoff."
While it won't technically be summer yet according to the calendar -- the official change of seasons will still be a few days away -- this being Georgia, the summer weather will be well underway by the time mid-June arrives, if the past is any guide. Temperatures should be well into the 80s on the day of the race, so runners should dress accordingly and be prepared for running in warmer weather.
Runners will follow an out-and-back course for the race that starts and finishes in Snellville's T.W. Briscoe Park, which lies just off the city's Lenora Church Road and features softball fields, tennis courts, an outdoor concert amphitheater, wide open green spaces and both a swimming pool as well as a lake for fishing and feeding the waterfowl and other wildlife that make their home in the park.
From the starting line inside the park, runners will head out on what is roughly a counter-clockwise loop course through the Snellville neighborhoods and city streets. Long straightaways along Lenora Church Road, Pate Road and Rosebud Road are followed by turns onto Temple Johnson Road, Skyland Drive, Rockdale Circle, Church Street and Poplar Street, before bringing runners back onto Lenora Church Road for the home stretch that brings runners back into the park for the race finish.
Runners will have four hours to complete the half marathon, which will start at 7:00 AM for both the 13.1-mile race and the 5K. Organizers say they expect anywhere from 1,500 to 2,000 runners to take part in both races at the event, so participants are encouraged to sign up early. Following the race, runners and their friends and families can take part in the Saturday Farmers Market on Snellville's Green in the Town Center, which will be followed by the "Grill'n on the Green" barbecue wings cooking competition, also on the green.
