Georgia > ZOOMA Atlanta Women's Half Marathon & 5K
Buford, GA  •  Sunday, April 22, 2012  •  Course Map

Run for its first two years along the streets of midtown and downtown Atlanta, and then for its third annual running at the Chateau Elan Winery & Resort in nearby Braselton, for its fourth year the ZOOMA Atlanta Women's Half Marathon & Girls' 5K race moves again, this time to Lake Lanier Islands Resort in Buford, about an hour to the northeast of the city.

Like the four other half marathon races in the ZOOMA Women's Series -- which also include races in Austin, Texas; Annapolis, Md.; Falmouth, Mass.; and Lake Geneva, Wis. -- the Atlanta race is designed especially for women and girls, to encourage athleticism and fitness among young women both for self-confidence and to encourage habits for better health and fitness, and to celebrate the athletic accomplishments of women.

The race is scheduled to start at 7:30 AM in the area of the resort known as the Grand Hall, and finish on Pine Isle Point near the resort. In between the start and the finish line, much of the course will take runners along the lakeshore of Georgia's largest and most visited lake. Depending on the weather in the weeks and months leading up to the race, Lake Lanier may be full or far below its full lake level, so expect to see plenty of red-colored shoreline if the weather has been dry for a while.

Otherwise, the course along the lakeshore will feature plenty of scenery, from the resort hotel where runners start and finish to the tree-lined roads along the lake, where they'll be able to take in lake houses and boats out on the water. Both races will start at 7:30 AM, and organizers ask that runners arrive no later than 7:00 AM before the start. Just shy of 500 runners crossed the finish line in both the half marathon and the 5K combined at the race's 2011 running in Braselton, so expect a relatively small sized field for the race.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in central northern Georgia, about 40 miles northeast of Atlanta and roughly 45 miles northwest of Athens, Buford typically sees April temperatures that average between 71°F and 48°F, while rainfall totals average just under 3.7 inches for the month, making April the city's driest month of the year. On the day of the race (April 22), the average high is 72°F and the average low is 50°F.
