Idaho > Dynamite Half Marathon & 5K
Preston, ID  •  Saturday, June 29, 2013  •  Course Map

If you're a fan of the 2004 Jon Heder comedy Napoleon Dynamite, then you'll no doubt get a kick out of this small southeastern Idaho town and the course for the all-new Dynamite Half Marathon & 5K, where both the name of the race and the course were inspired by the movie, and is set to take runners past several of the landmarks and sights where the movie was filmed.

Runners are set to start and finish the out-and-back course for the race in downtown Preston, Idaho, a town of about 5,200 residents here in the area known as the Cache Valley, surrounded by the Wasatch, Wellsville and Malad mountain ranges to the east and west. From the starting line on 1st Street East, about half-way between Oneida Street and 1st Street South, the course first heads north and east, with turns on 3rd North, 2nd East and 4th North Streets.

Starting in the early miles with the stretch through town and out into the hilly highways to the northeast, runners will be able to see several of the places where scenes from the movie were filmed -- you can find a complete map of filming locations here -- including Benson Park, the house where Napoleon Dynamite lived on 800 North, and the house where Trisha (played by actress Emily Dunn) lived, on 2600 East.

Later on in the race as runners are heading back into Preston toward the finish line, the course passes by both Pedro's house on 2nd Street and Preston High School, just before they make the turn in to the race finish back on 1st Street.

Though most of the course will be run on paved roads and highways, a few portions of the route will take runners on gravel roads, organizers note. There is also a one-mile fun run and walk in addition to the 13.1-mile and 5K races, which will start at 6:30 AM and 6:45 AM, respectively.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled along the Bear River in Idaho's southeastern corner, about 300 miles southeast of Boise and roughly 100 miles north of Salt Lake City, Preston typically sees June temperatures that average between 78°F and 46°F, while rainfall totals average about 1.2 inches for the month.

On the day of the race (June 29), the average low is 49°F and the average high is 83°F.
