Idaho > High Desert Trail Run Half Marathon, 10K & 5K
Pearl, ID  •  Saturday, May 25, 2013  •  Course Map

Filled with rolling hills along the mountain highways that lie between Boise to the south and Horseshoe Bend to the north here in western Idaho along the edge of the Boise National Forest, the High Desert Trail Run takes runners on an out-and-back course through a piece of old West history, through the ruins of the once-thriving mining town called Pearl.

Now a true ghost town in the mountains north of Boise, the streets of Pearl once bustled with the sounds of stage coaches, mule trains, horses and wagons carrying supplies back and forth from the nearby mines. Today, all that's left is a few long-ago abandoned mine shafts and the ruins of buildings that once stood here, a quiet and slightly eerie reminder of its past life. Runners will get the chance to make their way through all of this along the out-and-back course that starts and finishes just off Pearl Road, a few miles from the intersection with Highway 55.

After leaving the starting line -- the race starts at 9:00 AM -- runners head west along Pearl Road, beginning with a very long and gradual downhill in the first half of the race, followed by an equally gradual yet still quite challenging uphill stretch in the second half. Overall, runners will experience an elevation drop of more than 1,600 feet in the first half, followed by a climb of the same amount in the second half.

The race is hosted and managed by the City of Trees Marathon Association, which also stages the annual marathon of the same name in Boise every October, in addition to the annual Dry Creek Half Marathon and the High Speed Pursuit Half at the Prison in April.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled among the West Mountains that lie about an hour's drive north from Boise, roughly 11 miles southwest of the nearby town of Horseshoe Bend, the Pearl area typically sees May temperatures that average between 73°F and 44°F, while rainfall totals average just over 1 inch for the month.

On the day of the race (May 25), the average high is 75°F and the average low is 46°F.
