Idaho > Race 2 the Summit Half Marathon, 10K & 5K
Horseshoe Bend, ID • Saturday, October 18, 2014 • Course Map
Surrounded by the mountains of wild western Idaho just over a half-hour's drive north from Boise, this tiny town along a bend in the Payette River plays host to the annual Race 2 the Summit, a half marathon that features a long, steady uphill climb of more than 1,600 feet between the starting line and the midway point near Spring Valley Summit, with gorgeous views of the valley and the river all around.
Runners start and finish the race in Horseshoe Bend, home to just over 700 souls in a U-shaped bend along the Payette River, which changes the direction of its flow from south to north around the town before heading west into the nearby Black Canyon Reservoir. They'll start the race in Horseshoe Bend City Park, near the intersection of Noland Drive and Highway 55.
From there, the race route unfolds first across a bridge over the Payette River and then heads south along Old Emmett Road and Summit Ridge Road, which runners will stay on nearly all the way to where Summit Ridge meets Highway 55 again, the half-way point of the race. By the time runners reach the turnaround, they'll have climbed more than 1,600 feet in elevation since the start of the race, along a gradual uphill for virtually the entire first half of the race.
After the turn, however, the gradual uphill becomes an equally gradual downhill as runners retrace their steps in reverse along Summit Ridge Road, back north toward Horseshoe Bend. They'll finish the race back in town, after crossing the bridge on West Boise Street over both the river and the Power Canal, and cross the finish line near the intersection of West Boise and 8th Streets.
Organizers note that proceeds from the race will benefit the educational and athletic programs at Horseshoe Bend Schools; last year's race generated more than $10,000 for the schools. Nearly 200 runners crossed the finish line at the race's 2013 running.
