Set for its inaugural running here in this archetypal Midwestern city, which lies along the banks of the Illinois River and the lake that shares its name, Peoria plays host for the first time in the late summer of 2011 to the Peoria Half Marathon & 5K, which will take runners on a tour of the city via downtown.
Though not quite an out-and-back race, the course start and finish lines lie blocks apart near the city's riverfront area. Runners will start the race near the intersection of Madison Avenue and Fayette Street, and from there follow a route that takes them through a number of downtown neighborhoods, past the city's Carver Recreational Center and through the campus of Bradley University.
After they make their way through campus and back onto Main Street, runners then turn left and head onto Sheridan Road for a roughly mile-and-a-half-long straightaway stretch, which turns again on Forrest Hill Drive. Following Forrest Hill, runners then turn again and head through the Luthy Botanical Gardens and the Peoria Zoo in Glen Oak Park, and then head back down toward the riverfront for the final few miles of the race.
For a brief stretch near the end, runners head off the streets and onto the running, jogging and walking paths that line the riverfront, taking them through the tree-lined linear park areas along the river. The home stretch of the race brings runners into O'Brien Field, the home stadium for the Peoria Chiefs minor league baseball team, the class A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.
The starting time for the half marathon is set for 7:30 AM, followed by the 5K start at 7:45 AM. Runners will have 3 1/2 hours to complete the half marathon, organizers add.
