Set to take place on a U-shaped loop route through the park roads of Indiana's Morgan Monroe State Forest, which lies just a few miles south of the small city of Martinsville here in the southern central part of the state, the Bean Blossom Half Marathon features a challenging course that race organizers describe as "probably one of the toughest half marathons in Indiana," with the final two miles of the race along an uphill stretch to the finish line.
The race starts in the heart of the Morgan Monroe State Forest, whose more than 24,000 acres are home to a range of steep valleys and ridges as well as three lakes that are popular spots for fishing, and several miles of hiking trails. From the starting line on Forest Road, runners follow what is roughly a counter-clockwise loop along Forest, Old State Road 37 and East Anderson Road before turning onto North Bean Blossom Road for the last two miles of the race.
It's the race's last couple of miles that will likely pose the toughest challenge of the race, as they unfold over an uphill stretch that rises from roughly 600 feet above sea level to more than 900 feet by the time runners reach the finish line, just after the turn off Bean Blossom back onto Forest Road.
