Indiana > Race 13.1 Valpo Half Marathon
Valparaiso, IN  •  Sunday, November 11, 2012  •  Course Map

The hometown of former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Kevin Brown and legendary television commercial pitchman and popcorn developer Orville Redenbacher plays host in the fall of 2012 to the third annual running of the Race 13.1 Valpo half marathon, which is also designed as a fundraiser benefit for the local United Way of Porter County.

Hosted by the Indiana-based race timing company T&H Timing, the race follows an out-and-back course that starts and finishes just to the east and south of Valparaiso's downtown area, near the intersection of Eastport Center Drive and Enterprise Avenue. Nearby lie the campus of Ivy Technical State College and the Porter County Municipal Airport, which runners will be able to see as they run past in the first and second half of the race.

From the starting line along Eastport Center Drive, runners first make a quick loop by heading south and turning left on Redbow Drive, then left again on Transport Drive and left again back onto Eastport Center Drive before turning onto Enterprise Avenue, and then heading south onto Redbow and then onto Frontline Road.

The first half of the race features a very gradual overall downhill stretch from the starting line to just past the 7-mile marker, as runners follow Frontline and County Road 100 past the airport west toward North 450 East Road. There, runners turn left and begin a second loop section of the course, making a clockwise loop around County Road 200, North 600 East Road and County Road 150 before turning back onto North 450, after which they pass the mile 10 marker and start the last few miles of the race.

As you might imagine, the sections just west of the airport lie in its flight pattern and are thus sparsely populated, so runners can expect to see acres and acres of wide-open farm fields along these rolling rural country roads. The terrain is paved throughout, and runners make their way back along County Road 100 back toward the Ivy Technical State College campus back to the finish line along Enterprise Avenue.

Just over 530 runners crossed the finish line at the race's 2011 running, and for the 2012 race, the scheduled starting time is 8:30 AM.

Race Weather & Climate

In November, average monthly temperatures range between 48°F and 33°F -- on the day of the race (Nov. 11), the average high is 50°F and the average low is 35°F -- while precipitation totals average just over 3.5 inches for the month.
