Kentucky > Lexington Half Marathon, 5K & 1-Mile Fun Run
Mt. Sterling, KY

Saturday, March 26, 2011

Event Details

Perhaps best known for its bluegrass, Kentucky bourbon and its status as "the horse capital of the world," the city will play host in the spring of 2011 to its second annual Lexington Half Marathon, 5K Run/Walk and 1-Mile Fun Run, the fifth in a series of half marathon road races events that will be staged around the country throughout the year.

From the starting line in nearby Mount Sterling, which lies just a short drive east from Lexington, the race will take runners on a 13.1-mile route along rolling bluegrass hills, white fenced horse farms and through some of this city's most scenic areas.

If you're in town long enough to take in some of the sights for which this area is known, be sure to visit some of the equestrian farms as well as a sampling of the distilleries along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, including the Woodford Reserve, the Wild Turkey Distillery, Buffalo Trace and Four Roses Distillery Company. Much like a visit to the wineries of Napa Valley, California, visits to the distilleries are open to children and adults and give a full history of the production and culture of bourbon in the U.S., 95 percent of which is made in Kentucky.

Following the start of the half marathon at 8:00 AM, those running and walking the 5K Run/Walk will start their race at 8:15 AM, followed by those taking part in the Fun Run at 9:45 AM. This race is part of the USRA Half Marathon Series, which includes half marathons in Columbia, S.C.; Bentonville, Ark.; Mount Pleasant, Wis.; Charles County, Md.; Council Bluffs, Iowa; Bloomington, Ind.; Joplin, Mo.; Purdue University, Ind.; Clarksville, Tenn.; Lancaster, Penn.; Stockton, Calif.; and Flagler County, Fla.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in central northern Kentucky, roughly 85 miles east of Louisville, the city of Lexington typically experiences mild to cool and occasionally cold weather conditions in the early spring, with generally wetter weather in March than in January and February. In March, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 55°F and 36°F, while precipitation amounts average just over 4.4 inches for the month.
