Maine > PFBF CPAs Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk
Oakland, ME • Sunday, June 29, 2014 • Course Map
Set for its 5th annual running along the streets and country roads of this small southern Maine town that hails itself as the entrance to the Belgrade Lakes region, whose towns and villages are intertwined with seven lakes that offer plentiful warm-weather outdoor recreation on the water as well as on its golf courses and hiking through its hills, Oakland's PFBF CPAs Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk usually sees between 80 and 100 runners cross the finish line in the 13.1-mile race each year.
The race organizers also are partnering with the Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter, so that proceeds from the race will go toward helping the shelter maintain its home of 18 beds for the homeless in the local area, as well as for ongoing renovations and repairs to keep it as clean, comfortable and safe as possible.
On the day of the race, runners will follow an out-and-back loop course that starts and finishes in front of the offices of PFBF CPAs on First Park Drive, just off Kennedy Memorial Drive in Oakland. From there, runners head out and turn right on Kennedy Memorial, where they follow that road for about the next two miles, crossing over the Oakland River as Kennedy becomes Pleasant Street. Just after passing the mile 2 marker, the course turns right again, this time onto 10 Oaks Road.
Here, runners start a stretch of the course that features a long, mostly gradual uphill over the next four miles, which climbs roughly 250 feet between the low point along Pleasant and the highest point of the race, which occurs just after runners pass the mile 6 marker along 10 Lots Road.
After runners make the right turn onto Martin Stream/Rod Road, the route then begins a long and gradual downhill descent over the next few miles. Far from the town center, along these stretches the scenery is mostly wide-open farm fields along country roads in the middle miles of the race.
The final few miles of the half marathon bring runners back into town via Oakland Road, as runners make the right turn at about the mile 8 marker and head south. The downhill stretch ends just as runners are nearing the campus of Colby College, turning uphill again for the last couple of miles as runners make their way back to First Park for the race finish.
