Maine > Maine Trail Race Half Marathon & 5K
Sunday, September 19, 2010
Set for its first-ever running among the bucolic trails and hills of this corner of southwestern Maine, where lush green fields bordered by wooden fences and tree-lined roads lead into forested areas all around, the Maine Trail Race Half Marathon & 5K makes its debut on the state's race calendar in late September 2010.
In addition to offering runners the chance to run along the trails throughout the local area, the race also benefits the Friends of Little Field Home, a nonprofit organization that helps many of the estimated 1 million orphaned children in the African country of Malawi attend school. In addition to supporting local children, Little Field Home also conducts a range of workships for the people of their community in Malawi's Machinga district, from workshops on preventing the spread of malaria to counseling patients dealing with HIV.
Featuring both a 13.1-mile half marathon and a 5K, the race follows an out-and-back course that starts and finishes at New Gloucester's Pineland Farms, a roughly 5,000-acre working farm filled with rolling green hills and meadows, white split-rail fences, an educational campus that teaches students and visitors on environmentally responsible and sustainable farming methods, a farmer's market and cafe, and is also known for its specialty, Pineland Farms cheese.
Runners in the half marathon head out from the farm area, located along Farm Valley Road in New Gloucester, starting at 8:00 AM (those running the 5K will start their race at 8:30 AM). The race route takes runners along the winding trails in and around Pineland Farms, which cross its wide-open farm fields and head into the wooded forest areas surrounding the grounds of the main farm.
