Maryland > Chestertown Half Marathon & 5K
Chestertown, MD • Saturday, September 22, 2012 • Course Map
Set for its third annual running through the streets of this historic colonial Maryland town along the banks of the Chester River as the summer is giving way to autumn in September 2012, the Chestertown Half Marathon will take runners on a fast and flat tour of the city where one of the nation's earliest "tea party" gatherings first took place, back in 1774.
The race follows an out-and-back 13.1-mile route that starts and finishes at the corner of Chestertown's High and Water Streets and finishes in Wilmer Park, its waterfront park along the river located just south of the city's downtown. From there, runners follow the course out of the city and into the countryside here in what is known as the Eastern shore of Maryland, and then back again through the city to the finish line at Wilmer Park.
With their registration fees, runners will also be helping support several local charities and nonprofit organizations, as all race proceeds go to support the locally-based nonprofits Athletes Serving Athletes, Women in Need, Character Counts and Chestertown's Radcliffe Creek School.
Registration will be available on the day of the race, organizers note, and runners also can expect to see plenty of historic colonial-style architecture as well as authentic colonial-era sailboats out on the water, including the Schooner Sultana, which today serves as an educational vessel on the shipping and sailing industries back during the early 1700s.
Just over 260 runners crossed the finish line in both races combined at the event's second annual running in 2011 -- including 153 finishers in the half marathon -- and organizers say they expect the race to sell out.
