Maryland > MAC Half Marathon & 2-Person Relay
Freeland, MD  •  Sunday, May 18, 2014  •  Course Map

Sponsored and organized by the Maryland Athletic Club & Wellness Center -- known simply as "MAC" in nearby Timonium, where it's headquartered -- the MAC Half Marathon & Two-Person Relay takes runners on an out-and-back route along the Torrey C. Brown Trail, a 20-mile walking, jogging, biking and running trail built on the former rail line of the Northern Central Railroad.

The race also is run as a benefit to raise money for the House of Ruth, a Baltimore-based shelter for women who have been victims of domestic violence. Since its founding back in 1977, the center has helped thousands of women and their children reclaim their lives by providing a safe haven from abuse, and today provides a range of programs for women recovering from domestic violence as well as advocating for women who face such abuse.

Runners will start the half marathon in the small, unincorporated community of Freeland, which lies roughly a 45-minute drive from downtown Baltimore. From the starting line at the parking lot adjacent to the entrance to the trail -- which is 10 feet wide and made up of a stone dust surface, and stretches from the Maryland-Pennsylvania border near Freeland all the way south to Ashland -- runners make their way onto the trail and head south toward Parkton.

The half marathon route takes runners about 5.7 miles southward along the trail to Parkton, through tree-covered, wooded areas between the small towns here in northern Maryland.

Once runners reach Parkton, they then turn around and head back northward along the trail in the opposite direction, this time running about 7.5 miles north along the trail to the second turnaround point, which lies just north of Freeland. There, runners then turn around and head back south to the parking lot for the race finish.

Scheduled starting time for the race is 8:00 AM, and shuttle transportation will be provided to the handoff points on the course for runners participating in the two-person relay.

Runners also are encouraged to sign up early, as space in the event is limited to a total of 250 entrants -- just over 120 runners crossed the finish line in the individual half marathon in 2011, with 41 two-person relay teams also finishing the race.
