Michigan > Run2PayItForward Half Marathon
Waterford, MI  •  Sunday, October 12, 2014  •  Course Map

Filled with thick forests, marshes, ponds, old farms and lakes, the Pontiac Lake Recreation Area about an hour's drive outside Detroit is the setting for the all-new Run2PayItForward Half Marathon, which is set to make its debut with a course that's 80 percent single-track trails in mid-October 2013.

The other 20 percent of the race is made up of dirt roads, so depending on the weather in the days leading up to the race, runners can expect to get plenty muddy as they trek their way through this 3,745-acre park, which lies between the small towns of Waterford and White Lake Township. Throughout the year, it's a popular spot for mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding and camping, with more than 170 campsites scattered through the park.

Runners start the race off Teggerdine Road inside the park, about 2 1/2 miles north of Highway M-59. To get there, simply follow the signs for the Pontiac Lake Recreation Area Modern Campground, which will take you along a road into the park that turns to gravel, and past a barn and field to where the race starting line lies. Organizers note that runners with GPS devices should enter "3480 Teggerdine, White Lake, MI 48386" to get to the starting line.

Once there, the race unfolds through the woods and marshes in the park, and organizers say it's a challenging course -- "the mission of the event is to get us out into nature and help others by paying it forward," they add, noting that proceeds from the race will go to benefit a pair of local nonprofits -- Stay in the Shade, a charity that raises money for melanoma research, and Camp Casey for children with cancer.
