Runners will get a chance to run through three states if they're running the full, 26.2-mile marathon and two states for those running the 13.1-mile marathon -- as well as along a stretch of the famed Route 66 highway -- at the inaugural running of the Tri-State Mother Road Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K, which makes its second annual running on Missouri's race calendar here in this small city in Missouri's southwest corner in the early fall of 2011.
Part of a series of half marathon races being staged in small and medium-sized cities across the country throughout the year by the USRA Half Marathon Series -- which also includes races in Dalton, Ga.
; Lancaster, Penn.
; and Clarksville, Tenn.
, among several other cities -- the Tri-State Mother Road races feature a course for the half marathon that starts across the state line in nearby Baxter Springs, Kansas, and then takes runners through the small towns of Riverton and Galena before crossing over into Missouri to finish in Joplin's Schifferdecker Park.
Runners participating in the half marathon can expect plenty of flat terrain and some very gradual uphill stretches as they make their way from the start in Kansas to the finish line in Missouri, the second half of which takes runners along Route 66, from which the race gets its name. The highway -- which stretches from Chicago to Los Angeles and once was one of the main highways connecting the country -- is called the "Mother Road," and has since spawned innumerable references in music and popular culture.
The race organizers plan to have live bands playing music along the route, which crosses the Spring River in southeastern Kansas in the first half, and then finishes with a nearly three-mile-long straightaway stretch along Route 66 before finishing in Schifferdecker Park.
