Missouri > The North Face Endurance Challenge Midwest Regional Half Marathon
Kansas City, MO • Saturday, November 17, 2012 • Course Map
Part of a weekend full of running events that also includes a full marathon, marathon relay, 50K, 5K and 10K races, The North Face Endurance Challenge steps off its usual off-road environments for a road event in Kansas City in the late fall of 2012, featuring a half marathon that takes runners on a moderately hilly out-and-back tour of the downtown city streets, parks and residential neighborhoods here in the "show me" state's largest city.
The race is divided into a two-day event, with the full marathon, marathon relay and 50K taking place on Saturday, followed by the half marathon, 10K and 5K races on Sunday. (There also will be a one-kilometer race for kids on both days.)
For Sunday's half marathon, runners will follow and out-and-back route that makes a clockwise loop through the city, starting at Frank A. Theis Park, which lies at the intersection of Oak and 47th Streets overlooking Brush Creek, right across the street from the Kansas City Sculpture Park and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. From there, runners then head east along Emanuel Cleaver Boulevard for a brief stretch before turning right to head south on Rockhill Road, which becomes Cherry Street once runners cross over Brush Creek.
Over the next few miles, runners then head through a combination of tree-lined residential neighborhoods, public parks and college campuses, starting off with a run through the campus of the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Runners make their way past UKMC's soccer stadium, library and law school buildings along Cherry Street before exiting out onto East 54th Street, and begin what is probably the flattest section of the course, between the 1st and 3rd mile markers.
This stretch brings runners west and then north along Brookside Boulevard, bringing them back over the creek and alongside a series of linear parks that parallel Brookside, from Countryside Park to Mill Creek Park and finishing with the city's Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park, just past West 43rd Street. Here, the course starts heading uphill again, climbing roughly 100 feet over the next mile and a half or so as runners make their way toward Roanoke Park.
Runners reach the half-way point of the half marathon as they're passing along the southern edge of Penn Valley Park on West 31st Street, where they'll be able to see the park's skate park and off-leash dog park as they wind through Penn Valley along Kessler Road. They'll pass by a number of the city's landmarks like the World War I Memorial Museum and the Henry Wollman Bloch Fountain, in front of Union Station on West Pershing Road. That's followed by a loop up into downtown and then back again south toward the park, and then a long straightaway stretch heading south along Gillham Road.
The home stretch of the half marathon course unfolds as runners turn off Gillham and onto Warwick Boulevard, finishing with a stretch around the Kansas City Art Institute and back into Frank Theis Park for the race finish, where runners will be able to meet and greet with famed runner and author Dean Karnazes at the finish line festivities in the afternoon.
