Nevada > Pioneer Saloon Ghost Run Half Marathon, 10K, 50K & 50-Mile
Goodsprings, NV  •  Saturday, October 20, 2012  •  Course Map

Surrounded by the hills, mountains and dusty dirt roads of the southern tip of Nevada, the tiny town of Goodsprings (population 229) plays host twice each year to the Pioneer Saloon Ghost Run, a trail-like run out on the dirt roads that rise into the hills overlooking this town that lies about an hour's drive from Las Vegas.

Runners will start and finish the out-and-back course for the race at the world-famous Pioneer Saloon, where legend has it that Clark Gable stopped in to drink after the death of his wife, the actress Carole Lombard, and was reportedly never the same afterwards. Situated on a bend along West Spring Street in Goodsprings, which lies about seven miles off the highway northwest of the airport in Jean, the saloon was built in 1913 and is a throwback to Goodsprings' roots as a mining town, and has served as a filming location for movies like The Mexican and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

The saloon is also famous for its ghosts, which runners may or may not be able to catch a glimpse of while they're in town -- if they're lucky (or maybe if they're not!). For the race itself, runners will start the course in front of the Pioneer Saloon at 7:00 AM, and from there head into the hills that rise just to the northwest of town, onto the dirt road that once carried pioneers from Nevada into California more than a century ago.

All races will follow an out-and-back course, so runners in the half will proceed along the dirt road -- Kingston Road -- out to the half-way point, where they'll make the turn and then head back into Goodsprings for the race finish back at the Pioneer Saloon. The race follows an overall uphill climb from the start to the mid-way turnaround point, and then heads back downhill for a gradual descent back to the finish line.

There is an overall cutoff time of 14 hours for runners in the 50-mile race, which organizers add means there's really no cutoff time for runners in the shorter distance races. The race is a small one -- at its March 2012 running, 31 runners crossed the finish line in all three races (10K, half marathon and 50K) combined, including just 7 finishers in the half marathon alone.

Race Weather & Climate

Set in the desert canyon country of southern Nevada, about an hour's drive south from Las Vegas, Goodsprings shares weather conditions similar to nearby Jean (about 7 miles to the southeast), which typically sees October temperatures that average between 81°F and 57°F, while precipitation amounts average less than a quarter of an inch for the month.

On the day of the race (Oct. 20), the average high is 79°F and the average low is 55°F.
