New Hampshire > Pemi Youth Center Summer's End Half Marathon & 5K
Plymouth, NH  •  Saturday, August 25, 2012  •  Course Map

The final race in a series of three races set to take place throughout the spring and summer here in this small town nestled at the southern end of the White Mountains of New Hampshire, the Pemi Youth Center Summer's End Half Marathon & 5K offers a combination of paved and gravel road surfaces along an out-and-back course in a town that's been home to literary giants like Robert Frost and John Cheever.

Runners will start both the half marathon and the 5K at the Smith Covered Bridge (see a photo of the bridge here), which was originally built back in the early 1800s and has been restored and refurbished over the years, most recently in 2001. From there, runners in the half marathon will follow a route that takes them up into the southern edge of the nearby White Mountain National Forest, which spans some 800,000 acres across central New Hampshire and into western Maine.

The race route -- which is USATF-certified -- is paved for just beyond the first 3 1/2 miles, as runners make their way along Smith Bridge Road, Fairgrounds Road and Beech Hill Road. Between the 3rd and 4th mile marker, the course changes from paved surface to packed gravel and dirt roads, which will take runners over the next several miles as they head into the national forest, and also begin an uphill stretch that climbs some 360 feet between the mile 3 and mile 5 markers.

The stretch along Beech Hill Road leads to a left turn on Windmill Road, followed by a right turn onto Ryder Road a little over a mile later. Runners will follow Ryder into the woods, all the way to the end of the road where it loops around for the turnaround, and then follow it back out toward Windmill Road, where the course will turn left and bring runners back in the opposite direction along Windmill and Beech Hill Roads.

The gravel and dirt road surface changes back to paved roads between the mile 9 and mile 10 markers as runners head downhill on Beech Hill Road, and then there's just a few turns left before runners head back in to the Smith Covered Bridge for the race finish. Organizers note that while there will be five aid stations with water and refreshments out on the course, porta-potties will be available only at the start/finish line area.
