North Carolina > Morris Broadband DuPont Half Marathon & 5K
Brevard, NC  •  Saturday, April 20, 2013  •  Course Map

Near Brevard, North Carolina, the Morris Broadband DuPont Half-Marathon will make its second annual running in the early spring of 2013. Limited to 350 entrants, this small race will provide runners an opportunity to get in touch with nature here just outside Brevard in the DuPont State Forest, a 10,000-acre tract located in western North Carolina and named for the DuPont company, who sold the land to the state.

This beautiful forest contains many waterfalls and granite "mountains." The nearby Appalachians provide plenty of rolling hills along the course and plenty of technical terrain for trail runners. The course originates at Old Guion Farm and goes out-and-back with a turnaround point at Fawn Lake. There are two lakes, scenic overlooks, and plenty of beautiful forest to enjoy throughout the race. A total of 3 water/Gatorade stations are along the course allowing runners to hydrate a maximum of 6 times along their 13.1-mile journey.

After toeing the line for the start, runners head towards Buck Forest Road. From there, they continue heading south towards Conservation Road. Runners will pass by the beautiful Lake Julia on their left side and enjoy lovely views of this picturesque lake. When they reach Camp Summit Road, they will take a sharp left and head onto the Airstrip where they get a chance to run up and down the length of the strip.

Once runners reach Fawn Lake, they run the perimeter of the shoreline before heading back. The race winds its way back through the same course and runners can take a second look at their favorite spots along the route. The scheduled starting time for the race is 8:30 AM, and the gates to the starting line area open at 7:30 AM.

Wildlife, tree roots, rocks, and mud are abundant so runners must keep a keen eye as they traverse the course. The trail contains portions of dirt, gravel, pavement, and grass and offers plenty of excitement for all kinds of trail runners. The top 3 finishers in each age group -- the age groups will be divided into five-year increments -- will be presented awards along with the top 3 male and female overall finishers at an awards ceremony at 12:30 PM.
