North Carolina > Emerald City Half Marathon & 5K
Greenville, NC  •  Sunday, October 16, 2011  •  Course Map

Formerly known as the Run for the Booty Half Marathon, a pirate-themed race that also hosted a 100-yard run for kids called the Blackbeard Kids' Dash, the newly renamed Emerald City Half Marathon & 5K is set to take runners on an out-and-back loop course through the streets of this city that lies along the banks of the Tar River in eastern North Carolina.

The race -- which also will be run as a benefit for the North Carolina chapter of the Special Olympics -- starts and finishes at downtown's Greenville Commons, a small park and amphitheatre that lies along the river. From there, runners head out on what could roughly be described as a figure-eight-shaped route through the city, with the early miles taking runners eastward along 1st Street through downtown, followed by the next few miles through mostly residential neighborhoods.

Runners make their way in the middle portion of the race through the campus of Eastern Carolina University, which lies just south of the city's downtown. The course takes runners past the football, baseball and track and field facilities on Charles Boulevard, and past Dowdy Ficklen Stadium, the home of the university's Pirates football team. After the couple of miles through campus, runners next head northward and eastward, making their way toward the South Tar Greenway Trail.

The next stretch of the race features some of its most serene and scenic miles as runners make their way along the greenway trail, a 3.1-mile trail system that winds along the southern bank of the Tar River and along the river tributaries that lead away from the river into town in the area known as Green Mill Run. The last few miles of the race are run mostly along the paved running, walking and biking trails along the greenway, which curve around and take runners up to the riverbanks, and then back westward toward the Greenville Commons for the race finish.

The scheduled starting times for each race are 7:30 AM for the half marathon and 8:00 AM for those running in the 5K.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled among the North Carolina lowcountry in the eastern part of the state, roughly 85 miles east of Raleigh, the city of Greenville typically sees mild to moderately warm weather in the early fall, and much drier weather in October than in August and September, when the city's average precipitation reaches its peak. In October, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 74°F and 51°F, while rainfall amounts average just over 3.2 inches for the month. On the day of the race (Oct. 16), the average high is 74°F and the average low is 50°F.
