North Carolina > NC Half Marathon & 5K at Charlotte Motor Speedway
Concord, NC  •  Sunday, March 9, 2014  •  Course Map

NASCAR and auto racing fans, the organizers at this brand-new event set for the early spring have designed a race that will suit you to a "T" -- the all-new NC Half Marathon at Charlotte Motor Speedway, which is set to take up to 4,000 runners on a 13.1-mile tour of the speedway's track, infield, pit row, dirt track, drag strip and even the race finish along "Victory Lane."

Runners will start the race at 7:30 AM on the first Sunday of spring just outside Charlotte, N.C., in the small city of Concord, where the Charlotte Motor Speedway is headquartered. From the starting line at Bayside Park inside the grounds of the speedway, runners will then head out on a course that loops around the speedway track, through the infield (which, on race days, is filled with thousands of race fans) and then out onto the roads that wind through the parking lot areas just outside the spectator stands.

The course then winds in a clockwise direction around the southern end of the speedway, heading north around the stands back through the parking lots toward the dirt track, where the speedway's Monster Truck, TORC Series and World of Outlaws race series events are run. Following the stretch past the dirt track and along the roadway out to Concord Parkway South, runners then wind around and head back north toward the Zmax Dragway drag strip, where they'll run an out-and-back stretch along the entire length of the strip and get an idea of what racers see on the pavement.

After they make their way back along the pavement on the drag strip, runners then head back south through the parking lots toward the main speedway track, heading back into the infield and then making one final loop along the track before crossing the finish line at Victory Lane.

There, they'll be presented with what will certainly be one of the most unique race medals available, a race medal in the shape of a racing starting lights tree, with actual working LED lights that count down to green.

For runners and their friends and families with iPhones or Android-based smartphones, the race organizers also plan to release a special app with updated information, live pacing and results in the month leading up to the race. Check the Apple App Store or the Google Play store, or the race website shown below, for the app as the race approaches.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in central southern North Carolina, just over 20 miles northeast of Charlotte, Concord typically sees March temperatures that range between 38°F and 64°F, while rainfall totals average just under 4.5 inches for the month, making March the city's second-wettest month of the year.

On the day of the race (March 9), the average low is 36°F and the average high is 61°F.
