North Carolina > Ramblin' Rose Women's Half Marathon & Relay
Durham, NC • Sunday, October 21, 2012 • Course Map
Set for its second annual running in 2012 through the streets of this city that's probably best known for the minor league baseball team made famous in the 1988 Kevin Costner movie Bull Durham, the Ramblin' Rose Women's Half Marathon & Relay is set for its inaugural running in mid-October 2011 along a route that takes runners through the campus of Duke University as well as through several of its historic neighborhoods.
The race -- which is open to both individual runners as well as relay teams made up of either 2 or 3 runners -- starts at 7:30 AM at the campus of American Tobacco on Blackwell Street, just down the street from Durham Bulls Athletic Park, the minor league baseball stadium that was built in the 1990s and took the place of the old ballpark that was featured so famously in the movie (and where the old outfield Bull sign from the film has been relocated).
From there, runners head out on what is roughly a counter-clockwise loop route through the city, which starts by taking runners northward from the AT campus into Durham's Trinity Park neighborhood, where the route will take runners past gorgeous historic homes along Watts Street and Englewood Avenue, and then into Old West Durham. The early stretch of the race ends with an out-and-back loop on the quadrangle of the Duke University East Campus, where runners head up and back along Campus Drive and past the university's residence halls, libraries and Baldwin Auditorium.
Runners continue heading south along Campus Drive and into the main part of the university campus for nearly a mile. At the intersection with Anderson Street, runners turn left and head south into the Norwood Avenue and Lakewood Park neighborhoods, filled with tree-lined residential streets and rolling hills. The last few miles of the race are run mostly through residential neighborhoods here and in Forest Hills, before bringing runners back to the American Tobacco campus for the finish line near the ballpark.
