North Dakota > Thunderbird Run Half Marathon, 10K & 5K Run/Walk
Bismarck, ND  •  Saturday, August 23, 2014  •  Course Map

Organized by the United Tribes Technical College, an educational institution established for the Native American tribes living both here in North Dakota and around the country, the Thunderbird Run Half Marathon, 10K & 5K race takes runners on a winding, out-and-back route that starts and finishes on the UTTC campus and features ample views of the region's prairie lands, croplands and the forest areas along the Missouri River.

From the starting line on campus, which lies just a stone's throw from the Bismarck Municipal Airport, the race starts with a loop around camps along Sisseton Street, and then takes runners out onto Burleigh Avenue. There's a quick turn onto the frontage road that unfolds underneath Highway 1804, and then runners head back onto Burleigh for the next two miles of the race before turning onto Tavis Road.

After the turn onto Tavis, the east-west route becomes a north-south route, as runners make their way from the intersection of Tavis and Burleigh (which doubles as 34th Avenue) and head north along Smokey Lane, Riverwood Drive and the bike path that parallels Riverwood up to the turnaroud point just south of the Bismarck Expressway. Once runners hit the turnaround, they head back along the route they've just run for the second half of the race, all the way back to the finish line at the campus.

Runners can expect a few rolling hills thrown in to the mix of flat stretches, though no dramatic uphills or downhill stretches. The half marathon start is at 7:00 AM, followed by the 10K start at 8:00 AM and the 5K Run/Walk start at 8:15 AM.
