Ohio > Hands 4 Haiti Half Marathon & 5K
Saturday, May 22, 2010
Set for its second annual running in the spring of 2010, after an inaugural running in September 2009, Lima's Hands 4 Haiti Half Marathon & 5K gives runners a chance to run a fast, flat route along the country roads in and around the Fort Shawnee and Shawnee Township areas of northeastern Ohio, which lies just a few miles southwest of Lima, and to be part of a fundraising effort that benefits the Shawnee United Methodist Church's mission to support the people and children of Haiti, who suffered such massive losses in the January 2010 earthquake there.
The out-and-back course for the race starts and finishes at the Shawnee United Methodist Church on Zurmehly Road, and takes runners from there out past the campus of Shawnee Middle School and High School as well as a stretch than runs by the Shawnee soccer fields. The course then continues southwest of the Shawnee UMC out along Yocum and Inwood Roads, where the 5K runners split off from those running the 13.1-mile half marathon, whose runners then continue out into the rolling country roads south of town.
Along the next few miles, runners can expect to see row after row of corn in the farm fields they pass along the area's rural roads, as they head south along Beeler Road. The course stays on Beeler as it turns into Hauss Road, and then turns onto Wapak Cridersville Road as runners pass through the half-way point of the race. Runners stay on this road until turning onto Bowsher Road, and then head back up toward the Shawnee High School football stadium and then back up to the church for the finish.
In addition to the individual half marathon and 5K races, the event also offers corporate race team events for both the 5K and the half marathon, which are limited to 5 runners each and must include men and women, race organizers add. There will also be a kids fun run, which is free of charge.
