Ohio > State to State Half Marathon & 5K
Oxford, OH  •  Sunday, September 30, 2012  •  Course Map

There's truth in advertising at the State to State Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk, which really does take runners from one state to another and back -- in this case, from westernmost Ohio over the border to eastern Indiana and back over the course of the 13.1-mile race.

More than 770 runners and walkers came out to compete in the fall 2011 running of the event, which follows a mostly long, flat straightaway from the city center of Oxford -- home of Ohio's Miami University -- through town and about two miles into Indiana before hitting the turnaround point and heading back. In addition to the half marathon, the race also hosts a 5K for runners and a 1K race for kids.

The starting and finish line for the out-and-back race lies at the Uptown Parks area of downtown Oxford, right in the center of town at the corner of High Street and Main Street. From there, the course follows a long, straight path westward along Contreras Road, with short detours around the second and third mile markers to loop into Stone Creek Drive and the Knolls retirement community along Knollwood Drive. Participants turn back onto Contreras Road after each brief loop, and keep heading west along Contreras until reaching the turnaround point inside Indiana.

Though the course is mostly flat, there are a few rolling hills scattered throughout the route, especially at the beginning and end of the race and in the middle, between miles 5 and 7. Race organizers say the last couple of miles of the race follow a nice, gentle downhill to allow runners to make up some good time before hitting the final hill just before the finish, the cobblestone hill in the last mile.

Now set for its 10th annual running, the State to State race is organized by the Oxford American Discovery Trail Running Club, which began the race in 2003 as a way to encourage and promote long distance running locally and as a way to commemorate the American Discovery Trail, a nationwide recreational trail that crosses through Oxford on its way from coast to coast. Organizers welcome both runners and walkers to participate -- half marathon walkers start at 7:30 AM, while half runners begin at 8:00 AM.
