Pennsylvania > Muscle Team Challenge Rally for Research
Philadelphia,
PA
Date
Saturday, November 7, 2009
Event
Details
With races including a corporate team relay, half-marathon and 5K road
race, Philadelphia’s Muscle Team Challenge Rally for Research
marks its second annual running this year to raise money toward the
fight against muscular dystrophy, and expects to welcome runners,
walkers and tailgaters to come and enjoy the day, support those
participating in the race, and promote understanding of the disease.
This event is also unique in that the half-marathon and corporate relay
portions of the event are specifically an event for walkers, while the
5K race is the only part of the event for runners. The point-to-point
course for all of the events is flat with paved surfaces, and takes
place through the city streets and neighborhoods of Philadelphia, with
the starting line at the city’s Memorial Hall and the finish
line at Fairmount Park.
All funds raised by participants and during the event are donated to
the national Muscular Dystrophy Association (known perhaps most
famously for its annual telethon hosted by Jerry Lewis), which in turn
uses the money for research; physical, occupational and respiratory
therapy for those with muscular dystrophy; and the purchase of
wheelchairs, leg braces, communication devices and other assistance
equipment for MD patients, and more.

Weather & Climate
Mid-season fall weather can get quite cold in the Philly metro area, as
November temperatures average between 40°F and 55°F.
Wet weather is always a possibility (though thankfully the 2006 race
stayed dry), as precipitation averages about 3.16 inches for the month.
Fees
Individuals looking to participate in the half-marathon walk or the 5K
family fun run are asked to raise at least $170 for the Muscular
Dystrophy Association (the cost of 2 minutes of research), or to donate
$85 on the event day for children ages 12 and under.
