Pennsylvania > Run For Hunger Trail Half Marathon, 8K & 2-Mile Hike
Freeport, PA • Saturday, August 17, 2013 • Course Map
Designed as a fundraiser for Freeport's locally based Meals on Wheels program, which distributes meals and food to elderly residents around this small western Pennsylvania town, the Run For Hunger Trail Challenge combines a half marathon and eight-kilometer run with a two-mile hike for a race that takes runners through the region known as the Buffalo Creek Valley.
The race -- which features a rare afternoon starting time of 1:00 PM for the half marathon and 2:00 PM for the 8K and two-mile events -- takes runners on an out-and-back route that starts and finishes near the grounds of Birdsfoot Golf Club, which lies just a few miles north of Freeport off the Allegheny Valley Expressway. From there, runners head out into the woods that surround the golf course, along what are mostly single-track trails in and around the valley.
Runners should expect to find plenty of wildlife, as they'll be out in the backcountry -- in past years, runners have spotted deer, foxes and even a black bear or two while out on the trail. There are also some challenging, steep uphills -- organizers count four significant uphill stretches over the course of the race, which involve about 2,000 feet of elevation climb -- as well as some steep downhills, some of which have loose rocks and dirt.
There are also plenty of other natural hazards that runners can expect to encounter, from stream and creek crossings to logs, sticks and tree roots on the trails, as well as a few sections where runners will have to navigate stretches that are made up of nearly all large rocks. Runners also can expect to find a few bridges they'll need to cross, some of which are narrow, so organizers emphasize that you'll need to use caution in these stretches (and really all along the race course).
An even 100 runners crossed the finish line at the 2012 race, with 38 finishers in the 8K, and 62 finishers in the half marathon.
