Rhode Island > Rock & Roll Providence Half Marathon
Providence, RI  •  Sunday, September 29, 2013  •  Course Map  •  Series Calendar

Just over 3,700 runners took to the streets of Rhode Island's capital city and crossed the finish line in the late summer of 2012 at the second annual running of the Rock & Roll Providence Half Marathon, one of a number of new races that joined the lineup of "Rock & Roll"-themed running events around the country last year.

Now set for its third annual running in late September 2013, the race follows an out-and-back loop course through the city that starts and finishes near the Rhode Island State House on Gaspee Street, overlooking the waters of the Blackstone Canal nearby. From there, the course takes runners and walkers on what is roughly a clockwise loop through the city, past portions of the Brown University campus and through parts of Blackstone Park, which sits along the banks of the Seekonk River.

Like the rest of the races in the Rock & Roll Marathon Series, the Providence race also features live bands playing music throughout the course -- as organizers put it, "rock, funk, reggae and country, along with some jazz and blues to spice up the flavor" -- stationed roughly every other mile along the race route. Cheerleading squads from local Providence area high schools also join in with the thousands of local spectators who line the streets to cheer runners on.

Runners should note that the race will have a course time limit of 4 hours, which means each entrant will need to cross the finish line no later than 4 hours after crossing the starting line according to their own personal chip time (not the starting gun time for the overall race). For runners who can't complete the race within the course time limit, there will be a "sag wagon" that will take them to the nearest shuttle location or medical station.

Thanks in large part to its location near the Atlantic Ocean, Providence generally experiences warmer weather than its counterpart cities that lie further inland here in New England, a fact that no doubt contributes to its vibrant, thriving arts culture and restaurant scene, which visitors say makes it feel as much like a small town as the big city that it is.

Race Weather & Climate

Located at the head of Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay, at the mouth of the river of the same name, Providence typically sees mild to moderately warm and occasionally very warm weather in August, when temperatures average between 55°F and 73°F.

On the day of the race (Sept. 29), the average low is 49°F and the average high is 69°F, while rainfall totals average just under 3.7 inches for the month.
