Set for its sixth annual running in the spring of 2011, after a 2010 race that saw just over 430 runners cross the finish line, upstate South Carolina's Greer Earth Day Run Half Marathon doesn't actually take place on the official Earth Day holiday -- which is observed on April 22 -- but it will be a "green" event, managed to be as environmentally sensitive as possible.
The 2011 running of the race also serves as the South Carolina State Championship Half Marathon race recognized by the RRCA (Road Runners Club of America), which organizes state championship races in a variety of distances across the United States each year.
From the starting line at the city's Trade Street Place shopping center, the race course follows an out-and-back clockwise loop route through this city of roughly 26,000 residents, and includes a stretch around the middle portion of the race that takes runners alongside Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, where runners will see planes taking off and landing.
Runners in the 2010 race report that the course unfolds along an overall downhill slope for the first half of the race, followed by a mostly uphill route in the second half. Some portions of the race course also remain open to traffic in one lane, so runners are advised to always be aware of their surroundings out on the course if automobiles are present.
In conjunction with the 13.1-mile half marathon, the event also offers a 5K race and a kids' marathon, and bands will be playing out on the course to encourage runners as they make their way along the route.
