South Carolina > iRecycle Run Spartanburg Half Marathon & 5K
Spartanburg, SC  •  Saturday, October 13, 2012  •  Course Map

Runners will hit the city streets of downtown Spartanburg for a race that takes them along both the city's Greenway Trail and the roads and trails that wind around Duncan Park at the fourth annual running of the iRecycle Run Spartanburg Half Marathon & 5K, which saw 168 runners and walkers cross the finish line in the half marathon alone at its third annual running in 2011.

Note: The race is set to debut a new route at the 2012 race. The description below is for the 2011 course; when the 2012 route is released, it will be published below.

The out-and-back course for the race starts and finishes near the YMCA Building on South Pine Street, and takes runners in the half marathon -- which is open to runners only; the 5K is open to both runners and walkers -- southeast along Pine Street for nearly the first two miles, until runners reach the first turn, a right that takes them south onto Country Club Road.

The stretch along Country Club Road doesn't last long, however, as runners turn right onto the Greenway Trail just after passing the mile 2 marker. Officially titled the Three Rivers Greenway, the trail stretches some 8 1/2 miles through the city; runners will follow the trail for this stretch for a little less than a mile, and then re-join the Greenway Trail later in the race.

After they make the turn off the trail and onto Forest Avenue, the course heads southwest toward Duncan Park, whose baseball fields once served as the home for minor league baseball teams for the Philadelphia Phillies organization (today, the baseball stadium serves as the home field for a local high school team). Runners make their way around the southern end of Duncan Park, passing around the shores of Duncan Park Lake and then head back north again along West Park Drive.

The final couple of miles of the first half of the course bring runners back in the direction of Pine Street and the YMCA building, along Union Street and past Pine Street Elementary School, with another nearly-mile-long stretch along the Greenway Trail before turning right on Henry Street to make the turn back toward the YMCA, where the finish line lies. However, once they reach it, they've only finished half of the half marathon course -- they'll make a second loop along the exact same course to finish 13.1 miles and the race.

The scheduled starting time for the race is 8:00 AM, and the event is organized by the locally based United Resource Recovery Corporation, Spartanburg Coca-Cola and the City of Spartanburg.
