South Carolina > McLeod Health & Fitness Half Marathon, 5K & 1-Mile Run/Walk
Saturday, January 9, 2010
Set for its second annual running in the winter of 2010 here in this small city in eastern South Carolina, Florence's McLeod Health & Fitness Half Marathon also features both a 5K and a one-mile race, both of which are open to runners and walkers, as well as a "tot trot" 50-yard dash for young kids.
The 13.1-mile course for the half marathon starts and finishes, like the other races in the event, at the city's McLeod Health and Fitness Center, located on Willwood Drive, just north of the city's David McLeod Park. From there, runners follow a winding route through the residential areas just east of the park, out from the health & fitness center onto a loop that takes runners around Thomas Road, Whitman Avenue, Hart Road and Fernleaf Avenue.
Runners then head back toward the McLeod Fitness Center and then hit out onto the Florence Rail Trail, a converted former railroad that now features a combination of paved and natural surface trails to the west of the McLeod center. The course follows the rail trail for roughly a mile and a half, giving runners a taste of one of the race's few fairly steep hills as runners make their way between mile markers 3 and 4.
After the stretch along the Florence Rail Trail, runners then head back onto paved roads and start their trek northward along Ebenezer Road, crossing over the bridge that spans Interstate 95 along the way. The route winds its way through residential neighborhoods and along the highway as it makes its way around the course's northern edges, bringing runners in the last few miles of the race onto Florence's Hoffmeyer Road and then Beltline Drive, with a last stretch along unpaved trails back in to the finish line at the fitness center.
