Tennessee > Rutledge Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K
Saturday, November 13, 2010
Hosted by the Grainger County Fraternal Order of Police and designed both as a fundraiser for children from disadvantaged homes in the local area and as an opportunity for local children to interact with local law enforcement in a positive setting, the Rutledge Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K races take runners on a loop course through this small northeastern Tennessee town, located among the hills and forests of the Richland Valley.
Described by runners who've taken part in the race's previous events in 2008 and 2009 as a small, friendly race with plenty of local southern charm, the Rutledge Half Marathon (like the full marathon) follows an out-and-back loop course that those running the 26.2-mile race run twice, while those running the 13.1-mile race run once.
From the start and finish area at Rutledge's Ritter Farms, a working farm where visitors can buy fresh vegetables and pork and see how it's all raised and grown, runners follow a route that takes them eastward and southward from the farm toward the town center of Rutledge, with stretches past Grainger High School and along the Rutledge Parkway, as well as past the local primary and middle schools once they reach town.
Runners reach the half-way point of the race just as they're entering the edge of town, and then make the turn from Rutledge Pike onto Water Street, and then continue on along Cherry Street back toward Ritter Farms for the race finish. This being the mountain areas of east Tennessee, the race has plenty of hills along the route, particulary around the first mile marker and as runners are nearing the finish, between mile markers 11 and 12.
