Texas > Disco Half Marathon, 10K & 1-Mile Fun Run
Gainesville, TX  •  Sunday, October 9, 2011  •  Course Map

Big hair, leisure suits, gold chains, bell bottoms and big, wide collars -- you're likely to see all those and more at the Disco Half Marathon, which features a 10K and a one-mile fun run in addition to the 13.1-mile race, all of which are part of a series of races hosted by Dallas Athletes Racing in the Dallas-Forth Worth area throughout the spring, summer and fall.

Race organizers describe the course as "pretty 'hill-less,'" which means that its fast and flat for most of the race's 13.1 miles, which follow an out-and-back route that starts and finishes at Gainesville's Leonard Park Zoo. From there, runners head out first on a quick out-and-back stretch that takes them south to the campus of Gainesville Junior High School, which covers roughly the first 4 1/2 miles of the race.

This stretch, which unfolds east along West California Street and south along Farm to Market Road, includes really only one hill to speak of, just as runners are leaving Leonard Park between the first and second mile marker. From there on down to the school and back, it's all flat terrain on paved roads, as runners head back north and east along West California Street and pass the park to head over into downtown Gainesville.

Once they're across Interstate 35 and in Gainesville, the course then makes a big, counter-clockwise loop through the city's downtown and the residential neighborhoods just south of downtown. Turns south on Weaver Street and east on Frasher Street are followed by a north turn onto Lindsay Street -- which runners remain on for about the next mile -- and then quick turns on Santa Fe Drive and East Broadway Street before heading back west toward the interstate and Leonard Park, where they'll pass by the park a second time so they can head back toward Gainesville Junior High School for a second loop.

After making their way back down to the school, all that remains is the stretch northward along Farm to Market Road and West California Street to head back into Leonard Park, where the race finish line will be waiting. The scheduled starting time for the half marathon is 8:00 AM, followed by the 10K at 8:15 AM -- the one-mile fun run will run at 7:15 AM.
