Texas > West Texas Crossroads Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K & 5K
Odessa, TX  •  Saturday, October 5, 2013  •  Course Map

If you're a fan of Friday Night Lights -- either the 1990 book by Buzz Bissinger, the 2004 movie or the NBC television show that aired from 2006 to 2011 -- you'll get a kick out of running the West Texas Crossroads Half Marathon, which finishes at Ratliff Stadium, the football stadium where many of the scenes from the movie were filmed.

Runners in the full and the half marathons will start their race just outside Odessa, a city of nearly 100,000 out on the West Texas region known as Llano Estacado, on the campus of campus of CrossRoads Fellowship on Colorado Avenue. From there, the course heads south and east, just east of the campus of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin (named for the oil- and gas-rich region that Odessa sits atop).

After the first couple of largely flat miles, the race heads into a suburban golf course neighborhood just outside the city, and begins a long, very gradual uphill climb that continues throughout most of the remainder of the race. There's a brief downhill stretch between miles 6 and 8 and in the neighborhood known as Ponderosa East, but after that, the uphill climb resumes in the stretch along East Yukon Road.

The final couple of miles bring runners west along East Yukon Road, past the Ratliff Ranch Golf Links and into Ratliff Stadium, which serves as the home field for the football teams at Permian High School and Odessa High School.

Both the half and the full marathons are limited to 1,000 entrants each -- runners and walkers, provided they can finish the half marathon within four hours, organizers note.

Race Weather & Climate

Located on the plains of West Texas, about 325 miles west of Fort Worth, Odessa typically sees October temperatures that average between 51°F and 77°F, while rainfall totals average just under 1.8 inches for the month, making October its fourth-wettest month of the year.

On the day of the race (Oct. 5), the average low is 56°F and the average high is 81°F.
