Set for its inaugural running right in the middle of summer here in this small but rapidly growing city just a short drive south of Salt Lake City, Herriman's Liberty Half Marathon, 10K & 5K is set to take runners on an out-and-back run that benefits Operation 61, a locally based nonprofit that seeks to combat modern day slavery around the world.
Started in 2009 by a group of local residents who wished to make a difference by helping people overcome a wide range of personal afflictions and problems, both in their own community and further out into the world, Operation 61 now has been joined by Team 61, a series of races and running events that help raise awareness of the organization's mission and raise needed funds.
For the Liberty Half Marathon, runners will start the race early -- at 7:00 AM, to beat the heat -- at Herriman's Butterfield Park. From there, the race route follows roughly a counter-clockwise loop, running through the residential neighborhoods near the park and through downtown Herriman as well as out into the wide-open prairie lands that lie just outside town.
After a gentle and mostly downhill stretch for the race's first four miles, runners hit the beginning of a long and gradual -- and challenging -- uphill stretch around the mile 4 marker. This uphill incline lasts for the next four miles, as runners make their way past the Herriman Cemetery and out onto Myers Lane, which they follow for roughly two miles before turning left and joining Highway 111. With little tree shade and no tall buildings around to serve as a shield from the sun, sunscreen and sunglasses will be a must!
After the turn, runners then stay on 111 for an additional two miles before another left, which brings them back onto the Herriman Highway, and the start of a gradual downhill run for the last few miles in to the finish back at Butterfield Park. Organizers note that these hills are "tough," so runners will need to be prepared for a hilly and perhaps very warm run, depending on weather conditions on the day of the race.
