Utah > Prestige Half Marathon
Salt Lake City, UT • Monday, September 3, 2012 • Course Map
Taking a page out of the Boston Marathon playbook, the organizers for Salt Lake City's all-new Prestige Half Marathon -- which has its inaugural running on Labor Day -- are trying to create an event that is prestigious in more than just name: runners will have to show a qualifying time from a USATF-certified event in order to enter the race.
Designed to bring out true world-class athletes to a course that takes runners on what is mostly a gentle downhill route from the mountains that look out onto the Salt Lake Valley down into the city below, the race features what the organizers say is one of the fastest half marathon courses in the country, with a more than 1,400-ft. elevation loss over the race's 13.1 miles.
To gain admission to the race, you'll need to be posting some pretty impressive times, and you'll need to have achieved them within the 18 months prior to the year of the race. Runners in the under-30 age group, for example, will need to have recorded a half marathon time for 1 hour, 25 minutes for men and 1 hour, 35 minutes for women. Runners can also use full marathon times -- women in the under-30 age group will need to have finished 26.2 miles in 3 hours, 30 minutes, while men will need to have recorded a 3-hour marathon.
As for the race itself, runners will be taken by shuttle bus to the starting line, which lies in Emigrant Canyon just to the northeast of the city. From there, runners will start the race at 8:00 AM and follow a mostly gradual, continual gentle downhill descent along Burr's Lane and Emigrant Canyon Road. There is great variety in the scenery along the route, organizers note, with incredible canyon views in Emigration Canyon where the route begins, and at Memory Grove next to the Utah State Capital where the race finishes.
One of the most breathtaking views along the route is while runners are up on 11th East and are able to view the entire Salt Lake Valley. The race gives almost an eagle-eye view of Salt Lake city as you come from the higher elevation of the Canyon while you gradually descend to the city below.
