Utah > Utah Runner Girls Half Marathon & 5K
Alpine, UT • Saturday, August 24, 2013 • Course Map
Surrounded by the mountains of the Wasatch Range all around, this small but growing city in northern Utah that lies just a short drive north of Provo and Utah Lake marks the 3rd annual running of the all-new Utah Runner Girls Half Marathon & 5K in the late summer of 2013, for a race that also serves as a fundraiser for Eaton Alliance Foundation.
The race is designed especially for women runners, both as a way to promote better fitness among women through the weeks of training leading up to the race and to encourage life-long healthy lifestyles for women. And because it's designed for women, the race organizers are including several features with women in mind, from the Dri-Fit race t-shirts in women's sizes and even a special video intended to get entrants pumped up before the race.
Runners will follow an out-and-back course for the race that starts and finishes at 1st South Park in Alpine, along Village Way. From there -- runners in the half marathon will start their race at 7:00 AM, followed by those running the 5K at 8:00 AM -- the race route unfolds along what is roughly a clockwise out-and-back loop through the city, largely along residential neighborhood streets but also along some stretches of the city's highways.
The terrain features some hills in the early miles, but they're mostly very gradual uphills and downhills, like the stretch in which the course climbs about 100 feet between the start and the second mile marker. The hills get steeper in the second half of the race, particularly in the stretches along East 300 North and Bald Mountain Drive, which bring runners right along the base of the Wasatch Mountains that look out onto the city.
By the time runners have passed the mile 12 marker, however, the remaining mile or so they have left is all downhill back in to the finish line at the park. Runners should also remember to be on the lookout for what organizers call "the Chocolate Mile," where they'll find an aid station stocked with chocolate as well as water and drinks.
Just over 210 runners crossed the finish line at the race's inaugural running in 2011, including 77 runners in the half marathon and 134 finishers in the 5K. Organizers note that the 2012 race was capped, so runners thinking of signing up are encouraged to do so as early as possible.
