Virginia > Real Girls Run Half Marathon & 5K
Crozet, VA  •  Sunday, November 17, 2013  •  Course Map

Nestled between Shenandoah National Park and nearby Charlottesville in Albemarle County, Va., the tiny town of Crozet -- at 3.7 square miles, its population is just over 5,500 -- plays host in the late fall of 2013 to the first-ever running of the Real Girls Run Half Marathon & 5K, a new race designed to encourage "ladies, girlfriends, moms, daughters, dames, madams, chicks and girls of all kinds."

Runners will start the out-and-back course for the race at Claudius Crozet Park on Park Road, just south of this historic community's downtown. From there, the course follows a rolling hilly first couple of miles through town along Crozet Avenue, Buck Road and Railroad Avenue, followed by an overall uphill stretch for the next few miles, until runners are nearing the half-way point on Greenwood Road.

This much more rural stretch features an out-and-back all the way south to the turnaround point near the Rockfish Gap Turnpike, which unfolds largely downhill between miles 6 and 8. What goes down must come up, of course, so the next couple of miles after the turnaround are uphill until about the mile 10 marker on Greenwood Road. There, the route starts a gradual downhill that lasts for the next few miles in to the finish line back at the park (there are plenty of rolling hills along the way).

The course is filled with long stretches along country roads, with views of wide-open farms and the Blue Ridge Mountains off in the distance -- the Blue Ridge Parkway scenic highway lies a short distance from Charlottesville, in fact. In 2012, the race was run as a 10K only, and saw just over 100 runners cross the finish line -- the race distances change in 2013 from a 10K to a half marathon and 5K.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in central Virginia, just south of Shenandoah National Park and roughly a 20-mile drive west from Charlottesville, Crozet typically sees November temperatures that average between 39°F and 59°F, while rainfall totals average just over 3.7 inches, making November one of its drier months of the year.

On the day of the race (Nov. 17), the average low is 38°F and the average high is 59°F.
