Virginia > Trail Runner Ultra Race of Champions Half Marathon
Wintergreen, VA  •  Saturday, September 28, 2013  •  Course Map

Note: This race has been moved to Vail, Colo., for 2013. For more information, visit the race website.

Part of a day of challenging trail races sponsored by Trail Runner magazine that will also feature a 50K and a 100K, the Ultimate Race of Champions will also feature what organizers call the Cruxy Trail Half Marathon, as part of an effort to bring together some of the world's best ultra trail runners as well as entrants who are newer to this growing sport within the running world.

All three races take runners along the mountainous trails and forests of Wintergreen, the popular wintertime ski resort nestled high in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, about an hour and a half away from Richmond and about a three-hour drive southwest from Washington, D.C. Like the 50K and the 100K, the Cruxy Trail Half follows an out-and-back course that starts and finishes inside the grounds of the resort along Discovery Ridge, just off Mountain Inn Loop.

From there, the half marathon course takes runners on an upside-down U-shaped loop course, along single-track trails with names like the Old Appalachian Trail, Pond Hollow Trail and the Leisure Trail, along the condominiums and homes that line the resort's golf course, just south of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The terrain for the race is really a combination of a few different surfaces, as the majority of the course (about 7.6 miles) is on single-track trails, while the rest takes runners on paved roads and dirt mountain roads.

The location offers both plenty of challenging hills with an elevation that won't be too difficult for those runners who haven't acclimated to a high-elevation run -- the half marathon reaches a peak elevation of just over 3,500 feet near the Wintergreen summit, right around the mile 5 marker. There are some steep uphill climbs as well as downhill descents on the return route, as runners will climb roughly 1,000 feet between the mile 2 and mile 5 markers on the way out, and then make an equally steep descent in the second half of the race.

The scheduled starting time for the half marathon is 10:00 AM, and those running the half marathon will also start with the 50K runners. Those running in the 100K race will start an hour earlier, with a 7:00 AM start for the elite field and a 7:15 AM start for all others in the 100K trail run.

Race Weather & Climate

Located among the Blue Ridge Mountains of northern Virginia, just over 40 miles southwest of Charlottesville, Wintergreen typically sees September temperatures that average between 55°F and 79°F, while rainfall totals average just over 4.3 inches for the month.

On the day of the race (Sept. 28), the average low is 50°F and the average high is 76°F.
