West Virginia > Timmy's Challenge - Saige's Half Marathon
Cairo, WV • Sunday, August 26, 2012 • Course Map
Runners get a chance to join the fight against cancer by helping four very special children here in this small community in northern West Virginia, at a race called "Timmy's Challenge" that is actually four races spread out over two days in the last weekend in August, including a full and a half marathon as well as a 10K and 5K race.
Named for Timmy Quigley, a four-year-old boy from the nearby town of Fairmont who lost his battle with cancer in late 2004, the races raise both needed funds and spreads the word about the mission of Timmy's Fund, an organization that was inspired by Quigley's brief life and helps provided much-needed support to children fighting cancer and their families today.
For the half marathon, which is named for a young West Virginia girl named Saige who is battling leukemia and will be at the starting and finish line on the day of the race, runners will follow an out-and-back course that starts and finishes at North Bend State Park, which lies just to the east of Cairo along the northern bend in the Hughes River. From there, runners follow what today is known as the Northern Bend Rail Trail out to the turnaround point between the mile 6 and 7 markers, and then back to the park for the finish.
The course unfolds along a paved biking, walking and running trail that once served as the railbed for the old B&O Railroad, and so is mostly fast and flat for the entire route. There's a gradual uphill between the mile 4 marker and the mid-way turnaround point, as the course climbs roughly 140 feet over a two-mile stretch. Once runners make the turn, there's an equally gradual downhill over the next couple of miles, and then it's flat all the way in to the finish line back at the park.
The starting time for the half marathon is scheduled for 8:00 AM, and organizers ask that runners arrive at North Bend State Park for the race no later than 7:45 AM. In all four running events combined in 2011, 170 runners crossed the finish line, including 39 finishers in the half marathon.
