Event
Details
Hilly, challenging and run on a course that's both gorgeously scenic
and a place of great significance to the Great Lakes region's natural
history, the Aldo Leopold Half Marathon & 5K takes runners on a
trail race through southern Wisconsin's Devils Lake State Park, just a
few miles south of the town of Baraboo. The race takes runners through
this nearly 10,000-acre park's hills and trails, within view of its
500-ft. cliffs during the fall when the leaves are turning brilliant
shades of red, orange and gold, and along portions of its famed Ice Age
Trail, which winds along 1,000 miles through the state and highlights
how
glaciers carved the landscape millions of years ago throughout this
part of the country.
The 13.1-mile trail half marathon portion of the event -- which also
includes a 5K run and a two-mile race for children -- starts and
finishes along the shore of Devils Lake, the 360-acre lake from which
the park gets its name. From there, the course winds along a circuitous
route along the hills, trails and cliffs of the north-central part of
the park, passing within view of State Road 113 and County Road DL.
Runners will cross the loop course twice before heading onto private
interior roads through the park's Steinke Basin and then along the
East Bluff of the lake before making their way back to the finish line
near the lakeshore.
Runners are encourage to carry personal water bottles with them along
the run, as there will be two aid stations set up at about the 5.6-mile
and 10.5-mile sections of the race, but nowhere else along the course.
The race is also a very hilly one -- runners start the event at just
under 1,000 feet above sea level and climb to an elevation of more than
1,400 feet above sea level at several high points on the course along
the way, and encounter only brief flat stretches along the route.
The
course's biggest hills occur near the start and finish of the race, as
runners heading out run from the lakeshore up into the hilly cliffs and
those heading back are scaling down from the heights toward the end of
the race. The terrain runners will encounter will be all natural
surfaces, including fairly wide mowed-grass paths through prairie-like
areas and dirt trails through the forest areas.
